The KIF5B-RET fusion protein is produced by the fusion of the KIF5B (kinesin family member 5B) and RET (Rearranged during Transfection) genes. This fusion protein has been found in some tumors, particularly in lung cancer and thyroid cancer. The KIF5B-RET fusion protein possesses kinase activity, enabling it to activate cell signaling pathways that promote tumor growth and metastasis. Therefore, the KIF5B-RET fusion protein is regarded as a significant driver of tumors and a potential therapeutic target. BA/F3 cells are precursor B cells that depend on interleukin-3 (IL-3), and some protein kinases can replace IL-3 to enable dependent growth of Ba/F3 cells. This effect can be antagonized using inhibitors, thus allowing for research into kinase inhibitors.
